Expanded Radiation Services
Cancer therapy has made tremendous progress over the past 50 years. Through research and practice, three successful methods of treatment have emerged. Often, surgery is very successful in removing cancer. Chemotherapy can frequently diminish or eradicate cancer. Radiation therapy (focused high-energy x-rays) can likewise often minimize or cure cancer.
Genesis Care has committed to the upgrading and enhancing of the radiation therapy center in Rutherford County. In April of 2008, 21st Century Oncology completed the installation of a new state-of-the-art, high technology linear accelerator in the Forest City office. This machine is manufactured by Siemens Corporation and is called the ONCOR. The new ONCOR linear accelerator has advanced capabilities in electron and photon production to provide the latest technology and quality in radiation therapy for cancer treatment. The ONCOR is able to treat tumors with IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy). These technologies provide superior targeting and focusing of the x-ray, as well as visualization of the targeted area on a daily basis. The end result is more proficient targeting of tumors resulting in greater cancer care and less risk of side effects to normal tissues. Rutherford County's state-of-the-art radiation therapy services will make it possible for county residents to receive the highest quality radiation therapy available in the country.
Dr. Scott Roberts is a Radiation Oncologist who provides care to cancer patients in Rutherford County. "We are delighted to see that the cure rate for many cancers is fairly high with modern technology," Dr. Roberts explains. "We are committed in this county to providing a quality cancer therapy program that is truly comparable to any program in the country."
