Wound Healing Close to Home: Andy’s Story
June 09, 2026
For Andy, staying active has always been part of life. Between working part-time at Horne’s Home and Garden and keeping up with daily activities, he never expected a small spot on his heel to become something that would drastically affect his mobility and overall quality of life.
Living with peripheral artery disease (PAD), diabetes, and a history of bypass surgeries in his leg, Andy initially thought the wound on his heel was simply dry or cracked skin. But over time, the wound worsened, causing significant pain and making it difficult for him to walk or carry out everyday tasks. Eventually, the discomfort became severe enough that he had to walk on the outside of his foot just to relieve the pressure.
After being referred to Rutherford Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center by his primary care provider, Andy began weekly treatments with Rutherford Regional’s Wound Care team. While the first few visits were challenging, he says the compassionate care and encouragement from the staff immediately made a difference.
“They made me feel at home from the very beginning,” Andy shared. “The first couple of weeks were tense because treatment wasn’t always comfortable, but they made me feel at ease. They told me they had it under control, and they proved that they did.”
Throughout his healing journey, Andy says the team continuously adjusted his care plan to ensure progress and healing. More importantly, he never felt like “just another patient.”
“You’re more than just a number here — you’re family.”
Now nearing the completion of his treatment, Andy says he feels “100 times better” and is pain-free for the first time in months. Healing has allowed him to get back to doing the things he loves most, including staying active and continuing his work in the community.
Andy also credits his wife, Beth, for helping with his wound care at home, emphasizing that healing requires teamwork both inside and outside the clinic.
“A lot of people think they’re done when they leave the clinic, but you have to do your part at home too. It’s like homework.”
For others who may be nervous about seeking wound care, Andy’s advice is simple: don’t wait.
“Have peace of mind knowing these people know what they’re doing. Don’t ignore it because it will only get worse.”
For Andy, having advanced wound care close to home made all the difference — providing expert treatment, compassionate support, and a path back to the life he loves.
