Palliative care focuses on the care of patients with all types of chronic and progressive diseases, such as: advanced diseases of the heart, lungs, kidney and liver; and neuro-degenerative diseases, such as dementia.
Palliative medicine is the art and science of relieving pain, suffering and symptoms, when a cure is not possible.
Palliative care includes a broad range of interventions that together help the patient and the family maintain a good quality of life, while living with a disease. A patient with advanced illness will have their comfort ensured, personal values and decisions respected, and the family supported.
Rutherford Regional Medical Center works with the Palliative Care Team from Hospice of Rutherford County. The team provides aggressive symptom management, supportive care and education to the patient in the hospital, at home, or in the long-term care setting.
