Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

A method of obtaining a biopsy of the breast using imaging to accurately locate the area.

  1. You may be placed on a special diet.
  2. Leave the ice pack on the biopsy site for 30 minutes at a time.  Remove the ice pack for 15 minutes and then reapply for 30 minutes, etc.  Use the ice pack on and off for 24 hours, as needed.
  3. Remove the pressure dressing (gauze and tape) after 12 hours.
  4. Remove the clear dressing and the ace bandage after 48 hours.  After removing the ace bandage apply a band-aid over the site to prevent bra from rubbing the site.
  5. Wear bra 24 hours a day for seven (7) days after removing the ace bandage.
  6. Do not swim or soak in a hot tub for one week.  May take shower or bath.  After bathing, pat the biopsy site dry.
  7. Rest quietly for 24 hours.  Do not participate in strenuous activities (tennis, aerobics, heavy lifting, housework, yard work, opening car doors, moving furniture, etc.)  Avoid tanning beds.
  8. Take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin or Naprin) as needed for discomfort.  It is normal to have a small amount of bruising or a “knot” under the skin where the needle entered the skin.
  9. Do not take aspirin, Excedrin or any medicine containing aspirin for two (2) days after the biopsy.

Contact your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  1. Bleeding more than one (1) tablespoon in one (1) hour.
  2. Pain not relieved by pain medicine.
  3. Fever of 101 degrees F or above.

If unable to contact your doctor and feel you have an emergency, go the Emergency Department.
