Radiology Procedures and Preparation

Exam Time Diet Required Special Preparation
T-Tube Cholangiogram 30 minutes No special diet required. No special prep required.
Barium Swallow 30 minutes NPO after midnight. No special prep required.
Stomach (Upper GI, Gastroduodenal) 1 hour NPO after midnight (no ice or sips). Pediatric patients up to 24 months old - NPO for 4 hours before study. No special prep required except diet.
Stomach and Gallbladder 1 hour NPO except sips after oragrafin until midnight; then, NPO after midnight. Take 1 oragrafin pill every 5 minutes starting @ 9:00 am night before exam until total 6 pills are taken
Small Bowel Exam (SBFT, small bowel series) 1 - 3 hours NPO after midnight (No ice or sips). Pediatric patients up to 24 months old - NPO for 4 hours before study. No special prep required except diet.
Stomach and IVP 1 - 2 hours Clear liquids after Magnesium Citrate is taken in the afternoon. Then, NPO after midnight. Same as IVP: Drink 1 bottle Magnesium Citrate 1400-1600 on day before exam. Notify radiology if contrast allergies.
UGI and Small Bowel Series 1 - 3 hours NPO after midnight (no ice or sips). Pediatric patients up to 24 months old - NPO for 4 hours before study. No special prep required except diet.
Colon (Barium Enema, or Air Contrast BE) 1 hour Clear liquids on the day before the exam; NPO after midnight. Start taking E-Z prep on the day before the procedure; or, Colyte  until stools clears & Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) pills.
Colon Exam on Colostomy 1 hour Clear liquids after Magnesium Citrate is taken in the afternoon. Then, NPO after midnight. Drink 1 bottle Magnesium Citrate 1400-1600 on the day before the procedure.
Colon (BE) and IVP 1 -2 hours Clear liquids on the day before the exam; NPO after midnight. Follow colon prep: E-Z prep on the day before the procedure; or, Colyte until stools clear and Bisacodyl Pills.
Cardiac Fluoroscopy 30 minutes No special diet required. No special preparation required.
Diaphragm Fluoroscopy 30 minutes No special diet required. No special preparation required.
IVP; Intravenous pyelogram (kidney or urogram) 45 minutes Clear liquids on the day before the exam after Magnesium Citrate is taken. Then, NPO after midnight.
Infusion Pyelogram (Drip infusion) 1 hour Clear liquids on the day before the exam after Magnesium Citrate is taken; then NPO after midnight. Magnesium Citrate is taken the evening before the procedure at 2:00-4:00 pm. Call  radiology if allergic to contrast.
Rapid Sequence pyelogram (Hypertensive IVP) 45 minutes Clear liquids on the day before the exam after Magnesium Citrate is taken; then NPO after midnight. Magnesium Citrate is taken the evening before the procedure at 2:00-4:00 pm. Call  radiology if allergic to contrast.
Urethrogram 1 hour No special diet required. Usually, no prep needed unless ordered by urologist.
VCUG - Voiding Cystourethrogram 1 hour No special diet required. No special preparation required unless ordered by urologist.
Arteriogram/Aortagram 2 - 3 hours Clear liquids after midnight, then NPO after breakfast. Interview by Radiologist on day prior to procedure, lab work, IV, consent signed, shave/prep groins, possible sedation.
Arthrogram 1 hour No special diet required. No special preparation required; send shoulder films with patient to hospital.
Myelogram 2 - 3 hours Light breakfast and clear liquids until 2-3 hours before the procedure. Patient may be scheduled to come into outpatient-check with radiology dept.; lab work, consent, possible interview.
HSG (Hystero-salpingogram) 1 hour No special diet required. No special preparation unless ordered by ordering physician.
Percutaneous Biopsy 1 hour Light breakfast and clear liquids until 2-3 hours before the procedure. Interview by Radiologist on day prior to procedure, lab work, IV, consent signed, possible sedation.
Nephrotomo-gram 1 hour Same as IVP. Clear liquids on the day before the exam after Magnesium Citrate is taken; then NPO after midnight. Magnesium Citrate is taken the evening before the procedure at 2:00-4:00 pm. Call radiology if allergic to contrast.

Bronchoscopy/

Bronchogram

1 hour NPO after midnight. Respiratory therapy does prep. Pre-medication if ordered.
