RUTHERFORDTON – The Rutherford Regional Health System (RRHS) Pharmacy donated 27 full backpacks to the Rutherford County School System on August 21, 2014.
Susan Hoy, director of the RRHS Pharmacy, decided to conduct a community service project for the pharmacy team to participate in. “I challenged our pharmacy team to bring in supplies for elementary school children’s backpacks. I told them that if they could supply the school list items, I would supply the backpacks,” Hoy said. The pharmacy employees looked up the official supply list, published on the Rutherford County Schools’ website to make sure they purchased items that were needed.
The supply box soon started to overflow as the response to the community service project grew. John Domansky, Rutherford Regional Health System’s VP of Operations, joined the challenge by helping purchase more backpacks.
Due to the overwhelming response, Hoy decided to throw a “pizza & fill” party on Wednesday, August 20, where participants came, ate pizza and then filled the 27 elementary school backpacks. Backpacks were delivered to the Rutherford County School Office Building on the morning of Thursday, August 21, in time for the start of the school year.
"I am very proud of the generous hearts we have in our pharmacy,” Hoy said. “This was a very successful Community Service Project for us and one that I definitely think we’ll do again next year. I know that everyone who participated is happy we were able to supply the needs of 27 children to start this school year out better prepared to learn.”
