Rutherford Regional Health System Names New CEO

Seasoned healthcare administrator brings expertise and experience to Rutherfordton

Rutherfordton, NC (Dec. 15, 2016) – Rutherford Regional Health System (RRHS), a Duke LifePoint Healthcare facility, announced today that Rebecca Segal has been named chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital, effective January 16, 2017.  Segal brings more than 15 years of healthcare experience to the region, most recently serving as chief operating officer (COO) of LifePoint Health’s Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Ky.

“Rebecca has been a leader in the LifePoint family for several years, and we continue to be impressed by her strong leadership skills and operational expertise, as well as her deep commitment to the delivery of high-quality patient care,” said Jamie Carter, COO of LifePoint Health’s Eastern Group, which includes RRHS and other Duke LifePoint Healthcare facilities. “We’re excited to welcome her into this new role, and we are confident that she will do a wonderful job leading RRHS forward.”

Segal served as COO of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital since January 2014, during which she provided leadership to multiple departments including surgical services, ambulatory surgery centers, and the hospital’s imaging services and free-standing imaging center, to name a few. She also oversaw the hospital’s physician relations program and was instrumental in recruiting needed specialists to the area and increasing overall physician satisfaction. During her time at Lake Cumberland, Segal also established a Patient and Family Advisory Council, providing a meaningful platform to incorporate patient and community feedback into the delivery of quality care.

“We are very impressed with Rebecca, her long list of accomplishments, and her strong commitment to patient care,” said Michele Mercer, MD, chair of RRHS’s community Board of Trustees. “We look forward to welcoming her to Rutherfordton and applying many of her strengths and experiences as a leader to our healthcare system.”

Prior to her role at Lake Cumberland, Segal served as assistant administrator for two LifePoint facilities: Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va., and Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, W.Va. Before joining LifePoint, she served as a senior analyst in the managed care and reimbursement department and as a manager in the patient access and patient accounts departments at Mary Washington Healthcare System in Fredericksburg, Va.

“Rutherford Regional Health System has a rich history of providing quality care and being a healthcare leader in this region,” said Terry Hines, chair of the Governing Board that oversees the joint venture between RRHS and Duke LifePoint. “We believe Rebecca is the right person to continue this legacy and guide us through our next chapter, alongside our partners at Duke LifePoint. We are eager for her arrival.”

Segal has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg and a Master of Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. During her graduate studies, Segal received the 2010 Herman L. Mullins Award for Outstanding Management Study.

“I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to serve Rutherford Regional and its surrounding communities,” said Segal, “I am looking forward to working alongside Rutherford Regional’s impressive team of employees, medical staff and volunteers in the New Year, and getting to know the Rutherfordton community well.”
